Bird Launcher/Holder

After we have done a bird introduction with our puppies we like to get them out and start letting them learn to work birds. Teach them how to use there nose, how to run a quartering pattern, where to look for birds, and how to handle the birds once they find them. One of the tools we really like is our Pigeon holder/ launcher basically you can look a the short video clips and pictures below and you can see that it’s a simple square grated metal box. Attached to the top is a 12 foot cord so you can release the bird once the dog has gone on point. The benefit of using these bird launcher’s is it allows the scent of the bird to be released so the young dogs can smell it. They don’t make any loud noises when the birds are released unlike some of the catapult  type launchers, so the puppy doesn’t get scared. Most times it allows the bird to stand for a second before it flies away this really draws the puppies attention and will boost his style and intensity. Plus there inexpensive to build and easy to use. This is a simple tool that will increase your success when introducing puppies to bird work, it allows you to be in control of when the bird flies and where it is located. That way you can set up your puppy to succeed and have fun.
